Though not as grave as black bow ties, they are more serious than bowties of lighter colors and fit a mature wearer with his a head on his shoulders and feet on the ground. When one looks at a maroon bow tie one is inclined to think of autumn and of rustling leaves not of spring and blooming flowers, so don't wear one at a garden party where dancing is expected of you.
